Project Overview
Liberty Industrial was a key partner in the YM Efficiency Shipping Container Recovery project. The project, delivered for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, involved the salvage of 63 shipping containers that were lost overboard from the YM Efficiency cargo ship off the coast of Newcastle.
60+ containers were lifted from the seabed onto the MV Pride IMR vessel. The subsea lifts were carried out using a hydraulic crane and rigging, remote underwater vehicles, and a specially manufactured steel basket.
Liberty Industrial worked closely with project partners Ardent Oceania and Avcon Projects Australasia to provide critical sorting, demolition, and consolidation of containers not fit for transport or landing on the Port onboard the MV Pride IMR Vessel.
One of Liberty Industrial’s 36-tonne demolition excavators was lifted onto the deck of the MV Pride via a port crane and retrofitted with rubber tracks to ensure manoeuvrability and minimal damage to the salvage vessel.
The team showcased their skills working in an offshore environment, in challenging conditions, and meeting key deadlines to ensure both at-sea and land-based operations continue uninterrupted.
Debris recovered from the ocean during the salvage operation was transported to a specially constructed waste reception facility in the Port of Newcastle where the waste was classified, stored, transported, and disposed of according to NSW Environmental Protection Authority waste guidelines.
